Past Workshops...

This is a workshop for anyone who feels moved to experiment with sound, voice, rhythm, music, dance and movement. It will combine improvised instrumental music making and voicework with ‘Dance of Awareness’, which uses techniques from meditation, spiritual self-enquiry and ecstatic dance to allow a natural flow of awareness and energy within the body.

Music and dance are both ways in which we can express ourselves naturally and creatively without words. Music & movement help us dive deeper into the mystery of our inner world and connect with the energy which empowers it. Putting awareness into how we hold our bodies, consciously experimenting with different postures and beliefs, can be rewarding, revealing, moving and fun.

Sound and music provide an infinitely creative soundtrack to our lives, uniquely mirroring, expressing and communicating our emotions and life experience. This workshop opens new doors to musicians of all levels of ability, including complete beginners, offering a unique opportunity to experience the infinity of moods & textures which can be created by sound, voice, rhythm & music.

Putting music & movement together and we have a recipe for a day of deep fun and imaginative self - statement. What’s more, anyone can do it and you can’t get it wrong.We will be working with a wide range of instruments and our voices to create sounds, rhythms and music which will provide the soundtrack for improvised dancing. And by tuning in to our body shapes and allowing them to flow, we will provide inspiration for the band to make the music . At any time you could be a musician, singer, vocaliser, dancer, or all four and we shall explore different ways of combining these disciplines.

In the first half of the day will shall concentrate on learning and practising basic skills and awareness, in preparation for the second half, where the group will be invited to take more responsibility for its statement.

You do not need to call yourself a singer, musician or a dancer to enjoy this workshop. This is Community Arts, which is inclusive & participatory. Anyone who is interested can come – just be willing to discover and explore your natural musicianship and dance. You may be surprised and delighted by what you discover ! Come on an exciting journey into the music and movement of life - join the party & express yourself !

Instruments provided and bring your own, too!

The aim of this day is to give you an experience of the many different aspects of your voice and to help you to expand your capacity for self-statement. Be surprised by the amazing ways in which the voice can be used and be encouraged to develop areas of statement which you find challenging. The voice is a complex and multi-faceted instrument, involving our whole being - mind, body and spirit - and the day will bring all of these aspects together. It will be presented as an A to Z of the voice, so it will be a workshop full of interesting titbits..

We shall work with:

  • the breath as the starting point for all vocal sound;

  • your physical energy and stamina which are needed for extended improvisations;

  • your confidence to sing out and vocalise your feelings;

  • your willingness to communicate and connect with others and your level of concentration and depth of listening to yourself and the group as a whole.

There will be many opportunities for intuitive and creative vocal statement including toning and improvisation using free sound.

You will learn about some aspects of music as it relates to the voice (e.g. basic theory and ear training) and be introduced to a broad view of vocal technique. And we shall, of course, sing ! The repertoire could be anything from the past 50 years of popular music or from any country in the world. Songs will be chosen in order to teach a certain aspect of vocal technique or to challenge you to develop a particular area of vocal statement.

"More than just music/ singing. Good atmosphere, good venue. Gave me the confidence to sing in a way that I have never done before."

"A splendid day with a challenging pace, giving plenty of opportunity to explore, develop and let go. I am now on a new level of confidence with my voice as my creative tool, to use with increased versatility."

Come and join kindred spirits in a safe, inspiring, communicative and expressive vocal workout and create a sound community for a day in an inspiring central London venue.

"I feel very relaxed at the end of a rather moving day... there were some great musical experiences that transcended the everyday... I have reconnected with my joy of the singing experience and learned some lovely songs from cultures I have never connected with musically"

"Feeling more relaxed, but invigorated and full of wonderful music... an excellent, fun day, thank you."

There is so much music in the world... it's almost infinite ! We listen to most of it on CD's, TV and radio and watch others perform it. We are nearly always the audience, silently listening and appreciating, then applauding... and purchasing. But how often do you participate in creating it ? How often have you involved all of your senses in feeling the music of the world ?

Come and experience an amazing variety of world musical styles via your own statement. Your breath is the fuel that vibrates your vocal mechanism; your body the resonator which amplifies the sound; your mind is exercised by concentration on creating the words and syllables of a multitude of cultures; your energy mingles with others of like mind in interactive group processes and your feelings and your spirit can be healed by the whole vocal experience.

Come and express your many selves through the musics of the world. From uplifting multi-part harmony songs from Africa, to earthy, trance-like Native American chants, beautiful lullabies, rousing joyful Gospel songs, to deeply spiritual Indian chants.... to songs in languages you would never dream of speaking... ! And songs in English ! Sing the World will take you on a unique musical journey around the globe in one afternoon !

It's fun and it's very healthy !

A workshop which enables everyone to get into music ! learn the basics in a fun, sociable way !

An inspiring journey where the learning process and quality of group interaction are just as important the end product. Especially for those with no experience, those  who ‘play a bit’, used to play at school, sing in the bath, or have a dusty instrument in the attic ! THE MUSIC EXPERIENCE is about learning and participation. Interactive group processes will tempt you out of your musical shell... percussion ensembles, vocal posses, singing & playing, exploring moods, colours and textures with instruments, plus time to share your feelings and experiences.
